i have had my peregrine for around three weeks now, at first she was a bit nervous, but now she is doing well with my presence,
she shows a lack of interest in food, specially whole birds, though she has started to come around 40 feet to the glove, after a bit of messing around, and i am only able to get a flight or two out of her in a day, i cant understand the reason why she isnt that attracted towards the food,
i want to know:-
1) how i can make her more inclined towards her food,
2) is the calling on the glove step nesessary,
3) when can i introduce her to the lure,
4) is what i am experiencing a normal behaviour of a newly cought bird.

all these problems have been worrying me a lot, it would be very helpfull if anyone would provide me answers to these questions, thank you

Im asking for your help in locating my lost bird ( male goshawk ).
He went missing on the 1st of september in the piltown / owning area of kilkenny. He has a leg bell attached and a yellow transmitter on the other leg. On losing him that afternoon i have not been able to pick up a signal on my reciever. The tracking freqency is 216.000.
Its likely the batterys have exausted at this stage so my only hope in locating him would be that if someone was to see him and ring me on
( 087 9552392 ) day or night.

Thanks in advance guys and girls.
It happens to us all at some point or another, birds by their nature fly off.
It is a gut-wrenching feeling until you hear that bell again or get that longed-for faint signal on your telemetry to locate her.

It really is not a good time for a falconer, so if this section of my forum can help please use it.

If you do lose a hawk and would like assisstance,
stick up a post and let us know;
the general area,
the species,
maybe a partial ring number,
and the telemetry frequency (just in case, it's happened before that someone has picked up anothers signal while out hawking)

And please remeber if you do get her back to let me know and I can delete original post and keep this category clutter free!
Happy hawking,
I would have thought that August was very early in the year for one of these to move so far south. They usually live on the Artic tundra and would usually move south when food is hard to find, as they eat lemmings and such-like which become scarce in Winter. But even the Greenland-white-fronted -geese haven't their bags packed yet in readiness for their winter visit to Ireland.
I know Ireland in winter would not be my first choice of holiday destination if I could fly!

2009 is definitely the year of the eagle, with, thanks to human help, both eagle chicks surviving long enough to leave the nest.

Since 2001 53 eagles in total have been released in Glenveagh park in Donegal. It is one of these 8yr old females that nested last year, but successfully fledged chicks this year. Both chicks were male but, as with most raptors the younger (and smaller) chick is at a serious disadvantage because of the time delay between the laying of the first and second egg means there is a big difference in size between chicks. The first hatched chick will grow before the second egg hatches, and it is unusual for the second to catch up and so often dies.

In this case it was not standing up properly to beg for food and it was obvious if something was not done it would die. So it was taken out, and with veterinary help it was confirmed that the cartilidge of the leg was not forming properly, so it was reared for a short time under Harris Hawks with calcium supplements added to the food.
Eventually it was put back under the eagle pair, stood up and begged strong for food and reached the fledging stage this week.

The golden eagle project has been a major success to date, with 6 pairs holding territories and 2 singles also holding territories around Glenveagh they have reached capacity, so future eagles will have to travel further afield to find nest sites.

Happy days for the Eagles and a big pat on the back for all involved,
Well done!
